Responsibilities

OBXtek is staffing for a Writer/Editor/Press Officer in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security Office of Public Affairs reports to the Senior Public Affairs Specialist in DS/PA and supports the DS/PA written content and press teams.

 

The position will contain the following:

  • Oversees the planning, creation, layout and distribution of “DSS Focus,” the bi-monthly bureau newsletter distributed DS personnel all over the world.
  • Writes and edits content for DS and State Department internal and external platforms (including DSS Focus, the DS web pages, Knowledge Portal, DipNote, Facebook, Twitter and others as available) to inform audiences and/or highlight DS programs.
  •  Identifies appropriate public outlets for DS stories and articles to inform audiences and/or highlight DS programs, and works with editors to accept content and secure space on the editorial calendar.
  • Interviews senior executives and DS SMEs to accurately and clearly communicate DS programs and subjects in written content
  • Conducts research into DS subjects to accurately and clearly communicate DS programs and subjects in written content.
  • Provides creative direction to graphic designers in the layout and design of written products, curating appropriate photos and acting as photographer to provide photographs when necessary.
  • Knowledgeable of and able to apply current industry standards for writing, editing, and research to all content.
  • Drafts and edits press guidance for the State Department Press Office as well as speeches, talking points, brochures, executive memos, award submissions, and other written products as needed.
  • Provides support to the press team as needed, and on an approximately six-week, weekend rotation.

Qualifications

  • Must be a US citizen and possess or be able to obtain/maintain a SECRET clearance;
  • Must have expansive experience and detailed, specific knowledge of contemporary journalism standards, ethics, and techniques;
  • Must be highly organized and have excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, with a flair for telling stories clearly, informatively and accurately;
  • An excellent grasp of editorial structure, appropriate voice and tone and copy editing.
  • Knowledge of DS and law enforcement subjects, policies, practices and procedures a plus;
  • Ability to work independently.
